Hanami in Kent

Posted on 16/05/2013

One day I will go to Japan.

It has been a life long dream of mine and one day I will get there. When I do go it will be in the Spring to coincide with Hanami.

Hanami (花見) literally means flower viewing, it is an ancient Japanese tradition of enjoying and celebrating the beauty of flowers, primarily Cherry Blossom (Sakura). In Japan this is such an established and popular tradition that people visit from all over the world to see the blossom every year, there is even a blossom forecast (sakura-zensen) to help people plan their visit. During the day people come to picnic beneath the blossom. At night people hold parties amongst the trees which they decorate with paper lanterns, this is called night sakura (yozakura).

The ancient custom of Hanami dates back to the Nara Period (710–794) when people viewed the Plum blossom (ume) it was later in the Heian Period (794–1185) that Cherry blossom viewing became more popular and as a result is now synonymous with Hanami.

Every Spring when the blossom starts to bloom I am captivated by its delicate beauty and seeing it can transform my mood and makes my heart sing. I was absolutely delighted when I heard that Brogdale Farm in Faversham were holding their first ever Hanami event. Brodgale is home to over 300 different fruiting cherry trees and 42 ornamental cherry trees! Brogdale is a wonderful place to visit, it is home to The National Fruit Collection which is an incredible living gene bank of over 4,000 varieties of fruit trees including apples, pears, plums, cherries, cobnuts, currants and quinces. This precious resource includes rare examples and heritage varieties that cannot be found elsewhere. It is the biggest collection of fruit trees in the world!

Brogdale’s Hanami event involved a guided walking tour of the farms orchards in flower and ended with a lovely picnic lunch that we brought at the farm to eat beneath the flowering ornamental Cherry trees. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll celebrate Hanami in Japan.

The Candlelight Club

Posted on 05/02/2013

After hearing about it quite some time ago, I finally made it to The Candlelight Club for my birthday. It’s a magical place, imagine a ballroom filled with flappers and dandies, sipping Champagne from saucers. Everywhere you look there are pearls, feathers and swaying fringes. Men and women both dressed to kill, its fantastic!

This special 1920′s inspired event is held at a secret location in London once a month. Each party has a different theme, but its always centered around the 1920′s. The cocktail menu also changes monthly in keeping with the current theme and the location is only revealed a couple of days before the event.

So what to wear? I wanted to be as authentic as possible so I went on the hunt for a pair of  T-bar shoes and a drop waisted dress, with as much beading as possible!  I wore my hair up and pinned a rhinestone necklace into it at the front like a bandeau to finish my look.

To complete my outfit I added a long string of faux pearls, rhinestone pendant earrings and several geometric Art Deco paste  bracelets, all vintage of course!  If you’re off to an twenties themed wedding or event visit our Art Deco department for authentic period jewellery to complete your look. I really had the most fabulous time and hope to go back soon!

“The Candlelight Club really is the closest you’ll find to an authentic Jazz Age experience in central London. Its unique ambience, fuelled by hundreds of candles, is truly a scene to behold.” —Time Out

Time for Tea: My first Outfit post!

Posted on 04/09/2012

I recently got all dressed up to attend a rather wonderful tea party, so it was perfect timing for my first ever outfit post.

Photograph is courtesy of Jamie Gordon Photography

My Vintage Cornflower Blue 1950′s dress is from Revivals in Canterbury. I love everything about it: the fabulous shape, the ruching over the bust, the little bow, the sheer fabric covered in delicate little bunches of flocked flowers and that fact that it came with its original belt! I wore it with two Vintage Ivory coloured Celluloid bangles, made in Japan c.1930 and a pair of Vintage Trifari earrings. In my hair is a little Cream Rose hair flower from Accessorize.

I rarely go anywhere without at least one of these bracelets on my arm. If you like my bangles you can find a selection in my boutique.

The floral arrangements for the party were done by the lovely Marianne of Sweet Pea Floral DesignI am a big fan of her work, it is absolutely beautiful, these arrangements had a subtle vintage feel and pastel palette which was divine. She also incorporated a lot of my favourite flowers, including Mimi Edens and Dusk Pink roses.
